Gr 3-6-Although there are many books that cover these topics, these slim volumes have a special appeal. The 100 facts are organized into chapters that discuss historical background, family life, dress, government, religion, and more. Students will find these readable, colorfully illustrated titles entertaining and easy to use for research. Quizzes, activities, and fun facts enliven the presentations. In the first book, readers learn about the five stages of bathing, Roman style. "Let the games begin!" includes paragraphs on gladiators, the Colosseum, chariot racing, and the Circus Maximus. Latin words with definitions are sprinkled throughout. Egypt includes a detailed description of the importance of the Nile. Information about mummies and hieroglyphics will spark reader interest. A graphic time line shows the various dynasties, kingdoms, and important events in Egyptian history and a pyramid shape illustrates the class structure within this society. These books will be especially appealing to reluctant readers and to those in search of project ideas.-Lana Miles, Duchesne Academy, Houston, TX (c) Copyright 2010.
