Biography Resource Center (BRC) originally appeared in 1999 (we reviewed it in our November 1, 1999, issue), and a new version is now out. The interface of BRC 2.0 will look familiar to subscribers to other Gale products such as Literature Resource Center and History Resource Center. The number of reference sources in the BRC database has grown from 50 to 83, and the number of magazines and journals with full-text articles has increased from 232 to 250. Not surprisingly, the number of individuals included has also increased. If libraries choose the option of adding the Complete Marquis Who's Who database, they have access to an additional one million biographies, many of which are not included in the basic product. The ways to search remain essentially the same. There are now two kinds of Name Search: Name Contains and Start of Last Name. Name Contains is the default, although Start of Last Name might be a better choice because it generally results in a cleaner search. Custom Search, where searches may be done by occupation, nationality, birth and death date and place, and gender, has been renamed Biographical Facts Search. Full Text Search has been replaced by Advanced Search, where full-text searches can be limited by source or magazine date. A new way to limit the search is by image, although this link is buried at the bottom of the Biographical Facts Search and hard to find. There are currently more than 20,000 portraits--from 'sN Sync to Russian politician Gennadi Zyuganov. Through this search one may also find a photo of a very young Alan Greenspan! As before, documents are grouped by category of resource, such as Thumbnail Biographies and Magazine Articles. Links to Web sites are a new feature here. With a click on a link, a box appears with a disclaimer from the vendor and the option of closing the box or viewing the site. As might be expected, some links are dead and others do not work. Tabs make it easy to move from one category to another. In our earlier review, we commented that BRC had no Next option that would allow the user to move from one document to the next one in the same category. It is now possible to go from one document to the next without returning to the documents list. Citations to entries from Contemporary Authors are still misleading. They are cited as "Contemporary Authors . . . 2002," but many of the Contemporary Authors essays are from earlier dates. Some entries include a link to recent updates, but updating is spotty. When we last looked, the most recent update for Pete Sampras was dated September 9, 2002, while those for President Bush and Colin Powell were done in July. There is no question that this is an amazing resource. Biographies in Spotlight On (a feature on the home page) illustrate the breadth of the database--Elvis Costello, Winston Churchill, Ken Griffey Jr., Tom Hanks, Joan of Arc, Shannon Lucid, Amadeu Mozart. As with all Gale products, BRC is not inexpensive; however, librarians and patrons of high-school, academic and public libraries will find that it's the right place to begin research on an individual.
