Boal, president emeritus of the Interlochen Center for the Arts, has written an extensive history, warts and all, of "the largest youth center for the arts in the United States." Today, as when it was founded by Joseph Maddy as the National High School Orchestra Camp in 1928, the Interlochen Arts Academy continues to focus on performance, especially music. Classes in theater, dance, visual arts, and creative writing make it a truly comprehensive fine arts institution. This is not a nostalgic story replete with anecdotes but a thoroughly researched account of the center based on documents from the Bentley Historical Library, Interlochen archives, and interviews. Archival photographs are included. Alumni interested in the behind-the-scenes activities at Interlochen will find this book of particular interest. A definite purchase for music/ conservatory libraries and large academic collections.ÂJanet Brewer, Murray State Univ. Lib., KY (c) Copyright 2010.
