Gr 1-3-- The format for this book has been established by previous series entries: a few sentences against plenty of white space, complemented by lots of illustrations using full-color paintings and mostly black-and-white photographs. Greene's text gives a basic outline of Dunham's life, but without much background. For instance, there are many references to ``Black Dance'' without explanation of what it is. Also, both the chronology and a photograph caption mention the subject's 1992 fast to protest the U. S. government's treatment of Haitian boat people, yet ``fast'' is not defined in context, especially as a political act. These flaws aside, there should be a place for this book in most collections in which the series is in demand, or where there is an interest in African-American dance. --Kay McPherson, Central Atlanta-Fulton Public Library, GA (c) Copyright 2010.
