The Black Man's Guide to Good Health : Essential Advice for African-American Men and Their Families

This thorough guide, updated and revised from the 1994 original, emphasizes issues of particular concern to black men: high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke, diabetes, sickle cell disease, kidney disease, cancer, AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases, nutrition, etc. There is also a new chapter on violence as a health issue for young black men. Since men in general, and black men in particular, tend to avoid medical care unless they are seriously ill, this authoritative and clearly written book is well targeted to its audience and deserves their attention. The lifesaving advice offered here is interspersed with real-life case studies, and each chapter has suggested reading lists and resources for further information. Complementary to this excellent guide are Charles Inlander's People's Medical Society Men's Health and Wellness Encyclopedia (LJ 5/1/98) and Health & Healing for African-Americans (LJ 9/1/97). Reed (Morehouse Sch. of Medicine) is also president of the International Society of Hypertension in Blacks (ISHIB); coauthor Neil Shulman (Emory Univ. Sch. of Medicine) is a cofounder of ISHIB; and Charlene Shucker is a journalist. Recommended for healthcare collections.
