These essays presented by editors Cohen (English, Univ. of Missouri; After the End of History: American Fiction in the 1990s) and Konstantinou (English, Princeton Univ.; Pop Apocalypse: A Possible Satire) thematically explore the legacy of David Foster Wallace's work, considering it in relation to questions of literary history, aesthetics, and community. Among the historical essays is a piece that considers meaning and motivation in Wallace's nonfiction to establish his uniqueness in American literature. One comparative aesthetics essay analyzes the relationship of Infinite Jest to "Catcher in the Rye DNA." A number of essays discuss the communities of Wallace's readers-including one essay that analyzes the recommendations associated with his titles on Amazon.com. Among the contributors are Don DeLillo, Jonathan Franzen, David Lipsky, Rick Moody, George Saunders, and Wallace's editor Michael Pietsch; Dave Eggers's foreword to the tenth anniversary edition of Infinite Jest is also included. VERDICT This will be a sought-after title among scholars of American literature as well as Wallace's fans.-Jim Hahn, Univ. of Illinois Lib., Urbana (c) Copyright 2012.
