In summer 2003, London's Tate Modern Gallery broke with its traditional views of art by staging its first exhibition dedicated solely to photography (the exhibition is now on display in Cologne, Germany, through February 2004). This book is a compilation of the more than 200 photographs presented in the exhibit, edited by Dexter (senior curator, Tate Modern) and Weski (former chief curator, Museum Ludwig, Cologne). Focusing on stark realism, the curators decided to use the works of Walker Evans and German photographer August Sander (1876- 1964) as an axis. Four essays, written by the editors and renowned photography experts David Campany and Susanne Lange, range from an explanation of the art form to a dissertation on Sander. Following the images are biographies of the 23 photographers represented and suggestions for further reading. While this catalog offers a fascinating look at realistic 20th-century photography, its specialized focus makes it most suited to academic libraries.-Sandy Knowles, Henderson Cty.
